In August 2018 Gauntlett ESU was the proud recipient of a National Lottery Community Fund (previously Big Lottery Fund) loan to help provide Skills Through Adventure for young poeple in our community. The funding had allowed us purchase camping equipment, expedition equipment including personal equipment, training equipment and some sports and games equipment.

Since gaining the award one year ago we have increased the unit size by 70% and our young people have:

  • over 75% of our members to started Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards
  • over 50% have completed the bronze level
  • enjoyed over 120 nights away for our young people
  • given over 200 hours helping younger scout sections learn skills
  • given over 100 hours to environmental and conservation causes
  • spent over 100 hours helping in our local community
  • lent equipment to other local community groups to enrich more of our community
  • gained qualification from Royal Yacht Association and British Canoeing
  • supported community events and organisation such as Tockwith Show and Yorkshire Countrywomens Association

Try and leave this world a little better than you found it, and when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate, you have not wasted your time but have done your best.

Lord Robert Baden Powell

Scouting provides a package of interrelated benefits for participants. For those involved the key benefits are fun, friendship, exciting activities, contributing to the community and improving life chances in terms of education and employment. The lottery funding has allowed Gauntlett Explorer Scouts to start and develop these skills and friendships for teens living in a rural location with little other provision for teenagers.
